The Graduate Sociology Student Association Constitution

Article I: Title
The title of the organization is The Graduate Sociology Student Association.

Article n: Purpose
The purpose of The Graduate Sociology Student Association is to enhance the experience of students at the University of Massachusetts Boston with an interest in Sociology. This purpose is met through social, academic and educational events.

Article IP: Membership
Any student at the University of Massachusetts Boston can become a member of The Graduate Sociology Student Association. All members must pay a $1.00 fee at the beginning of every academic year.

Article IV. Officers
A total of four officer positions are available to members of the Graduate Sociology Student Association. All officers must be members of the association. The duties of the four officer positions are as follows:

A. President: Organizes and arranges all meetings. Organizes elections. Assists Treasure in financial duties.
B. Vice President: Performs the duties of the President when s/he is absent. Organizes and oversees event committees.
C. Treasurer: Responsible of all financial transactions and duties.
D. Secretary: Writes and distributes minutes. Responsible for the distribution of all other announcements.

The Graduate Sociology Association requires at least two officers at all times. One officer must hold the position of President and the second must hold the position of Treasurer. When the position of Vice President and Secretary are not filled, the President is responsible for the duties of the Secretary and the Treasurer is responsible for the duties of the Vice President.

Article V: Elections
The election of an officer is based upon availability. Officers are decided during the first regular meeting of the academic year. Elections are not required when only one member is volunteering for an officer poaMon. When more than one member is volunteering for an officer position, the following steps are taken:

A. Candidates are announced at the first regular meeting. If not all officer positions are filled, candidates can be announced during any other regular meeting. Elections can be held at my time of the academic year, depending on when members decide to run for officer positions.
B. Candidates must write a one paragraph announcement regarding why they want to become the specific officers, which is distributed by the Secretary.
C. The vote takes place at the next meeting.
D. All members have one vote. R Votes are taken by a secret ballot, which are counted by the President.
E A majority vote is required for a candidate to become an officer. If an officer holding the position of President or Treasurer is no longer able to perfbnn his or her duties, the process of filling the position will occur at the next meeting.

If an election is required, candidates announce their interest during this meeting, and elections are held at the following regular meeting.

Article VI: Meetings
The times of regular meetings are determined during the first meeting of each academic year. Times of regular meetings can change during the academic year. Information about all meetings is distributed by the Secretary. At least two meetings must be held each year. Emergency meetings must be announced by the Secretary at least one week prior to the meeting.

Article Vn: Activities
Activities are open to all University of Massachusetts Boston students. The Secretary is responsible for distributing information about ail events to students. A meeting needs to be held prior to the event, in which the event is discussed. If any member disagrees with the proposed activity, a majority vote is held.

In order for this Constitution to be amended, the amendment needs to meet a majority vote during a meeting of The Graduate Sociology Student Association and also be approved by The Graduate Student Assembly.
